Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a big step and a year of many
challenges as your child prepares for junior high.
Our job as educators is to assist him/her
through this transition. Students will learn through a
variety of modems within the Core Knowledge Curriculum.
This takes in account the diverse learning styles within
the classroom and accesses across the curriculum
teaching opportunities, The students will experience
such areas as United States history, the Renaissance
period and how all living things are connected within
our universe. I look forward to working with you and
your child!

Language Arts: The essential
elements consist of whole class reading, independent
reading, group reading, partner reading, writing,
spelling, listening, speaking, and grammar. These
are taught through many different mediums that
fulfill different learning styles. Some examples
are: literature circles, workshops, and drama. These
are achieved through the Imaginate Curriculum.
Writing: Students will develop skills through
using the writing process of prewriting, drafting,
revising, editing, and publishing. They will be
required to use T-notes as a prewriting tool. Each
trimester students will be working on a specific
writing piece such as response to literature,
narrative, compare and contrast, and persuasive
essay.
Math: Students will be involved in lessons
and activities that allow them to communicate with
one another and take part in cooperative learning
experiences.
Social Studies: The essential elements of the
5th grade social studies curriculum focus on United
States history. There are enrichment projects
assigned for each unit.
Science: Students are involved with reading
and comprehending textbook material and are involved
with hands on learning that allows them to explore
as they cover various science concepts. A science
project is assigned for each unit. The students will
learn about Life Science, Classification, cells and
elements. We end our year with a River Trip in
Coloma to study the water ecosystem.
Voyages: Students will explore God’s word
through our unit work book and the bible. An
enrichment project will tie into some writing pieces
throughout the trimester. Students are expected to
memorize and obtain the understanding of the following:
• Lord’s Prayer •
Apostles’ Creed and their petitions
• Morning Prayer •
Evening Prayer • Books of the Bible • Ten
Commandments and their meanings • Sacraments and
their meanings • Various Bible verses
P.E.: The students in the 5th grade are
required to participate in the Presidential Physical
Fitness Program that takes place in the spring.
Art: Students will learn to appreciate many
different types of art work and the history of the
creator of a particular piece through observation,
lecture, media, and classroom projects.
Each child is unique with their ideas which are
shaped by their personal experiences. I like
to expand on this wonderful resource by allowing the
students to express themselves the way they want to
be perceived. I feel this creates the best learning
environment for all of us.
