2009-2010 Curriculum Overview
Reading SRA Imagine It! is an exciting update
to Open Court. It is a comprehensive program for
reading, language arts, grammar, spelling, penmanship,
and writing.
It also includes studies of Latin
and Greek roots as they relate to English Language.
Instruction will be at grade level and will involve both
reading and writing workshops.
History and Geography For Geography, spatial
sense, geographical terms and features, Canada, and the
important rivers of the world will be covered. We will
be studying Ancient Rome and the Vikings in World
History, and in American History, we will cover the
earliest Americans, early exploration of North America,
and the Thirteen Colonies up to the Revolutionary War.
Science In Science, we will introduce the
classification of animals. We will be learning about the
Human Body: muscular system, skeletal system, nervous
system, how the eye works, and how the ear works. We
will also be experimenting with light, optics, and
sound.
We will be building on our students’
knowledge of habitats in Ecology by exploring the
interdependence of organisms and their environment. In
Astronomy we will cover the Universe, Galaxies (Milky
Way and Andromeda), Our Solar System, planetary motion,
gravitational pull, Asteroids, meteors, and comets,
eclipses, stars and constellations, and exploration of
space.
We will also be reading biographies of
important people in Science as they relate to our units.
Religion We will be covering Old Testament
History from the Creation through Jonah, and New
Testament History from the Birth of Christ through the
growth of the Early Christian Church.
Math Saxon Math at Grade Level
Physical Education, Art, Technology, and Music
PE, Art, and Music will be taught in rotation.
Music Through participation students will
become familiar with the basic elements of music
(rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, etc). They will
learn basic notation and sight reading through both
learning the recorder, and using their voice.
They will be exposed to a wide range of music, including
children’s music, popular instrumental music, and music
from various cultures. We will also be learning about
various composers and their contributions throughout the
year.
